Adaptive use of spaces in the Hospitality Industry offers numerous benefits.
I start by fundamentally pull the spaces apart to reveal their underlying logic and to discover new spatial and programmatic possibilities. Subtraction can be more impactful than addition!
The goal of the above process is to explore new possibilities that can both strengthen existing bonds and establish new ties between a space and its community of users.
Spatial inefficiencies are inherent to adaptive use and may be a boon rather than a compromise. Spaces within existing confines can force unexpected adjacencies and interconnections. An open attitude towards discovery and a view of the existing structure as a collaborative force can reveal potentials that would otherwise elude themselves.
There is an undeniable richness to the experience of the layered environment of an adaptive use project. One that elicits delight, curiosity, and connection. Adapted spaces can reinforce a sense of place while displaying deliberate action that makes them relevant and accessible to the diverse clientele they serve.
In this adaptive use process I start from developing an understanding of the space purpose and history, from its original context through to the present.
Starting from the fact that many spaces are often comprised of a messy agglomeration of histories and compounded aspirations, I examine the varied experiences, and sometimes conflicting meanings, that are associated with the common and private spaces. I do this without preconceived notions of utilizing one outlook versus another, and shepherd the dialogue away from nostalgic utilization and towards one framed through critical reflection.
Then I highlight and heighten the productive tension that is derived from the intended use versus the actual use.
The above approach to adaptive use of spaces involves little investment and focuses on how to leverage existing, already available, non-liquid assets - furniture and furnishings, removable and fixed features, soft and hard space layout, adjacencies, etc - to improve quality of stay for the clientele and outside visitors, while increase efficiency, foot traffic and revenue for the Property and Operating Management.
That is why my services are neither those of an Architects or Interior Designer, nor those of an Operating Management Team...instead, it is the much-needed different perspective to assure that the actual intended use and returns from original opening concept are still relevant and applicable. Or else, adapt to regain space allocation purpose.
Well, believe it or not, I never get paid in dollar amount,
but instead I convert it in days/weeks/months of room use.
Why?
Well, first because by staying and working inside the premises, I can better understand, hands-on, the dynamics and needs. And then I can easier analyze, propose and take action.
Second, above all, because I am a passionate Professional driven by a strong sense of commitment and desire to provide concreate results that do not affect negatively the clients' pockets.
